Bridging registration is Open!
GSWW offers learning opportunities for troop-level volunteers year-round. Independent training sessions and courses are available on the gsLearn platform, including how to lead activities the Girl Scout way, safety requirements, and how-tos about leading troops at every grade level. After following the link, scroll down to find the section on gsLearn.
The two most useful and important trainings a Girl Scout adult volunteer will need - First Aid & CPR Training, and Outdoor Overnight Training - are listed below.
Every troop meeting/outing must have a registered adult member who is trained & certified in first aid and CPR. These certifications must be renewed every two years.
Locally, a Service Unit 245 volunteer hosts in-person and hybrid classes. Pre-registration and payment are required, and online coursework must be completed prior to the class. Upcoming Dates & Registration
If your troop will be sleeping outdoors—whether in a tent in a backyard, in an outdoor unit at a GSWW camp, or under the stars at a campground—you need at least one adult to have Outdoor Overnight training from GSWW. This is an in-person, overnight workshop. You should plan to attend about 3 months before your troop’s overnight. Prerequisites for the workshop are online and available on gsLearn: Day Trip Planning and Basic Overnights. As mentioned above, after following the link, scroll down to find the section on gsLearn.
These other trainings are offered by Girl Scouts of Western Washington.
Day Trip Planning – This training is required for volunteers who will be taking their scouts on an excursion outside of their troop meeting that will last for 4 hours or more but is within 30 minutes of emergency service.
Basic Overnights – This training is required if you plan on going on an overnight with your scouts that is primarily indoors. This covers overnight trips that are up to 2 nights (or 3 on federal holiday weekends)
Outdoor Specialist – This is an optional training for those volunteers that would like to help other scouts experience the outdoors safely. Becoming an outdoor specialist is a way to volunteer with troops if the other adult members are not comfortable with outdoor activities.
Trip Advisor – This training teaches volunteers how to guide a group of scouts on an extended travel excursion (more than 3 nights and/or out-of-state). This teaches how to lead but keep the trip scout-led and all the intricacies of planning a large scale adventure with a small group.
Managing and Cooking in Camp Kitchens – If you are looking to cook for larger groups, this class will allow you to utilize the commercial cooking facilities available on many of the GSWW properties.
A visual progression of all courses GSWW has to offer, is found in the Adult Guide to Learning Opportunities.
