This hierarchical view provides generic information about the organizational levels, as well as specifics to our Service Unit.
Founder Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout Troop on March 12, 1912, and the Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by the US Congress on March 16, 1950. The Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) is a national organization made up of over 100 councils throughout the 50 states and territories, and that helps girls develop leadership and skills to reach their full potential. The organization's mission is to inspire girls to become responsible citizens of the world.
Girl Scouts of Western WA is our local Council. A Girl Scout Council covers a geographic area that can range from a single county to multiple states. Councils work to promote Girl Scouting by making the program accessible to all girls and gender-expansive youth. GSWW supports membership through skill-building workshops and trainings, meaningful program opportunities and the maintenance of eight different council owned properties to support the Girl Scout experience.
A Service Unit is comprised of troops and volunteers who are all located in a certain geographic area (usually zip codes). The Cedar and Sound Service Unit (#245) is one of 80 in the Council. They support local troops, volunteers and Individually registered members (IRMs) through events, meetings, trainings and conflict resolution. Our geographical area is the entirety of the Edmonds School District.
Girl Scout Troops are a group of 5-30 Girl Scouts, Troop Leader(s), a Troop Treasurer, and Troop Product Manager(s) usually. Troops meet regularly for scouts to have fun, make friends, grow their confidence, explore new interests, develop leadership skills, and to make a difference in their community. Financial support for troop activities is mostly done by selling the most beloved fundraising product - Girl Scout Cookies! Learn how you can start a Troop.
Girl Scouts participate in outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, kayaking, and swimming. They do community service like volunteering at animal shelters, and packaging up food for those experiencing homelessness. They build their skills like counting money, crafts, movie-making, and how to be safe online. STEM is supported via opportunities to learn from and work with local businesses like aero-space giant, Boeing. They can earn badges for these and other activities. The Girl Scout organization is open to Girls and gender expansive youth that are in kindergarten through 12th grade. Not a member yet, join Girl Scouts.
Due to our size, the council is loosely divided up into regions. (North, King, South and Peninsula) All activities, program and trainings are available to all Girl Scouts, but you may choose to look to your local area for ease of attendance. See links below for specific events pages.
