Scouts from SU 245 frequently participate in these volunteer-run outdoor experiences that are open to all GSWW scouts/troops.
Skillettes: This is a weekend of learning and practicing outdoor skills with volunteer experts. This is a troop event, so it requires the adult-to-scout ratio and indoor overnight training.
Junior Skills: This is a competition weekend for 3rd through 6th grade troops to show off their outdoor skills. Points are given for confidence in skill demonstration in the areas of knots, lashing, outdoor cooking & sanitation, fire building, first aid, leave no trace, general camping & clean up, and teamwork.
Cascade Challenge: Cadette, Senior and Ambassador scouts compete during this primitive outdoor camping weekend in May. Scouts can attend as a troop or form their own Cascade Challenge group. Teams are evaluated on teamwork, leadership skills, and general camping knowledge. Challenges are completed without ‘help’ from leaders. Leaders whose troops are interested in participating are encouraged to volunteer as judges in the year prior to competing.
YAYA Hikers: This group provides monthly hiking and backpacking opportunities for scouts in 6th through 12th grades. YAYA = Young Adults Yearning for Adventure. This is not a troop that you join; it is another outing to go on in addition to your troop’s activities. Since this is a youth-focused group, adults may come if space is available. Transportation and trained GSWW volunteer Girl Scout leaders are provided for each hike.
Our council offers sleep-away camps, day camps and events hosted at camp properties. In addition, you can rent a camp property to use with your troop, family or other group. GSWW's Ways to Camp has more information on both.
