Young Ladies Start Your Engines….our 12th SU Pinewood Derby will be held
Sunday, February 9th at 2:30 PM at Meadowdale High School.
Who: Calling all 4th Grade and older Girl Scouts.
What is a Pinewood Derby: Actually a long time Cub Scout program tradition, essentially scouts will build a car from block of pine, they will saw, sandpaper, drill, and tool this block (with their adult’s help), into a racing car form of their choice. A few measurement requirements are provided with the car kit. This has been a lively family activity on race day, but the more memorable time is building the car with an adult’s help: Dad, Mom, Grandpa, Uncle, Aunt…neighbor…anyone she chooses!! Their favorite part of the process: “painting something real-not just paper”, “having time with my Dad”, and “using a hammer and drill “.
Competition is often fierce with cars named to reflect attitude and confidence, names such as: Future Force, Black Hawk, The Maple Bar, Model A, Cookie Power, and The Blue Bomb to name a few!! In races so close we have to go to a hundredth of a second, three finalists emerge to take home the trophies for First, Second and Third place. In addition a fourth trophy is for the Coolest Design (voted on by the scouts).
Suggestion to leaders: This is usually not a whole troop activity, some are just not interested. Since space is limited to 64 races, please make reservations for those truly interested. Note: it takes a minimum of 6 hours to make the car. By the way, cars from prior years may not be used. The Racer must be present for car to be raced.
How to register: Download from SU Website and mail to Kimberly Frost, volunteer coordinator.
The entry fee of $12 includes the car kit, plus and awards (patch for all, trophies to four).
Deadline to register: Jan 2, 2014
